Who protects Helsing’s European combat drone — and who owns the protector

On 27 July 2026, from Oberkochen, HENSOLDT announced its first delivery of the CAIRAS missile warning system for CA-1 Europa, Helsing’s autonomous combat aircraft. The order covers three systems. It is the first concrete self-protection and passive optronic reconnaissance contract to come out of the strategic partnership the two companies signed in February 2026. Value and duration are undisclosed. In the announcement photo, standing in front of the CA-1 Europa, are Stephanie Lingemann (Helsing’s Vice President Air), Federal Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius, and Oliver Dörre, HENSOLDT’s chief executive: high political visibility, small contract.
Who HENSOLDT is, and who really owns it
HENSOLDT was spun off in 2017 from Airbus Defence and Space’s electronics division, then acquired by the KKR fund. It is today a German defence sensor group — radar, optronics, electronic warfare — headquartered in Taufkirchen, near Munich, listed in Frankfurt’s MDAX segment. In 2025 it reported revenue of €2.46 billion with around 9,500 employees, according to the company’s own release.
Ownership is the point on which this series has already corrected other errors: it must be taken from the most recent source, not the first page found online. HENSOLDT’s 2024 Annual Report — the latest one filed — states: the Federal Republic of Germany, through the development bank KfW, held 25.1% as at 31 December 2024; Leonardo S.p.A. held 22.8%; free float stood at 52.1%. That is not the 2021 picture, when Leonardo had bought a matching 25.1% stake: a capital increase in December 2023, which Leonardo did not fully take part in, diluted it to 22.8%, while KfW held its stake steady by exercising an acquisition right. On 1 August 2026 Leonardo’s chief executive, Lorenzo Mariani, told analysts that the original plan to reach a majority stake is “clearly not possible” today, and that the group is in no hurry to sell: no sign of a recent change. Leonardo therefore remains a significant minority shareholder in one of the two suppliers of the aircraft Helsing presents as sovereign for Europe.
CAIRAS: seeing the missile before it sees you
CAIRAS stands for Compact Infrared Reconnaissance and Alert System. It is a passive sensor: it uses dual-colour infrared to detect an incoming missile at an early stage of flight, without emitting any detectable signal of its own — unlike a radar, which must reveal itself in order to see. The system comprises a central processing unit and up to seven latest-generation infrared sensors, arranged to give spherical 360-degree coverage, with a high probability of detection and a low false-alarm rate. On the CA-1 Europa, CAIRAS is embedded within the AMPS-MR suite (Airborne Missile Protection System), which combines it with the Kalætron radar warning system and a decoy dispenser — the first time the AMPS suite has been installed on an unmanned aircraft.
On a crewed fighter, a pilot integrates the sensor’s data with their own judgement. On an aircraft with nobody on board, that judgement must sit entirely in the software, which can only decide how far the data it receives is reliable and free of false alarms. That is why HENSOLDT feeds CAIRAS data into its own MDOcore package, which fuses it to support autonomous responses and also renders it as a real-time panoramic view, not just an alert.
The CA-1 Europa: where the programme really stands
Helsing unveiled the CA-1 Europa on 25 September 2025 at Grob Aircraft, its own subsidiary in Bavaria, which builds it. It is an uncrewed combat aircraft in the 3-5 tonne class, with cranked-kite wings, a single engine, flown by Helsing’s proprietary Centaur software, already demonstrated — according to Helsing and Saab — in a test flight aboard a Gripen E in beyond-visual-range scenarios. First flight of the kinetic-attack version (now designated CA-1KA) is planned for early 2027, with initial operating capability set for 2029. In June 2026 Helsing also unveiled an electronic-warfare variant, the CA-1EA — same airframe, same propulsion, different payload — with initial operating capability planned for 2031.
No public customer has been declared for the programme. Helsing describes it as the only truly European solution being offered to the German and allied air forces — an offer, not an order. It is the same point this series was precise about on an adjacent aircraft, Archer and Anduril’s Halo: an announcement describes an intention, a contract imposes an obligation, and here the contract — the one for CAIRAS — covers a sensor, not the aircraft.
The terms of the deal: what’s there, what’s missing
There is a strategic partnership from February 2026, under which HENSOLDT supplies Helsing with radar, optronics, self-protection and electromagnetic warfare technology for the CA-1 Europa. There is a first order, dated 27 July 2026, for three CAIRAS systems. What is not in the release, or anywhere else: the order’s value, the delivery date, whether the framework agreement is exclusive, or the intellectual-property terms covering MDOcore or Centaur where the two systems talk to each other. Even the statement from Christina Canitz, Head of the Optronics Division at HENSOLDT, should be read for what it is — a positioning, not a clause: “The integration of CAIRAS into an unmanned system marks a turning point: self-protection was long a matter for manned platforms. Now it is becoming a fundamental requirement for autonomous systems that must survive and make decisions independently.”
What it means
The first effect is a market one: HENSOLDT enters the self-protection segment for uncrewed aircraft, until now the territory of crewed platforms, just as Europe multiplies its collaborative combat aircraft programmes (Airbus with Wingman, Rheinmetall with Boeing on Ghost Bat, alongside Helsing). Whoever wins subsystem qualification on a flagship programme like the CA-1 Europa starts ahead of the rest.
The second is cross-dependency. The CA-1 Europa is marketed as a guarantee of European strategic autonomy from non-EU suppliers. But its self-protection comes from a company that is 22.8% owned by an Italian group and 25.1% by the German state — an arrangement that makes HENSOLDT anything but a neutral supplier, and that ties the programme to the decisions of two governments rather than to an open market. And Helsing, which according to financial sources would remain roughly 80% European-owned even after the $1.8 billion round closed on 13 July 2026 (an $18 billion valuation, led by the US fund Dragoneer with Lightspeed and Goldman Sachs), still hands a significant share of its own capital to investors headquartered outside the Union. Declared sovereignty and actual capital do not always match: anyone buying a system presented as sovereign should check both.
The third is the classic dual-use point: a 3-5 tonne combat aircraft comfortably clears the MTCR Category I thresholds (500 kg payload, 300 km range), with the resulting strong presumption of denial for exports outside a narrow circle of allies — the same constraint already seen on Archer/Anduril’s Halo and on Destinus and Thales’s interceptors. A sensor like CAIRAS, given its passive detection of military threats, in turn falls under the dual-use controls of Regulation (EU) 2021/821.
The criticism of Helsing, for completeness
Helsing is on our watch list of companies to monitor. Three documented criticisms, for completeness. Financial: the Financial Times headlined on 14 July 2026 about the company’s “crazy” valuation, tying it to fears of a bubble in defence technology. Reputational: Daniel Ek’s involvement — his fund, Prima Materia, had led the June 2025 round — triggered an artist boycott of Spotify, reported by the Los Angeles Times on 31 July 2025. On product: Helsing’s first loitering munition, the HF-1, was criticised for its high price and unsatisfactory performance, before the company replaced it with the HX-2, now approved for frontline use by Ukrainian forces. On none of these three fronts do any allegations, to date, relate specifically to the CA-1 Europa or to CAIRAS: that caveat needs stating too.
The operational lesson
- A three-unit order is not a programme: before reading a market trend into it, ask for value, delivery schedule and exclusivity.
- Check who owns the supplier, not just who owns the programme: an aircraft presented as sovereign can rest on subsystems from companies with foreign shareholders of reference, public or private — sovereignty is measured system by system, not by slogan.
- On passive sensors, ask for the false-alarm rate and who measures it: it is the figure that decides whether an autonomous system reacts or freezes, and it is rarely public.
- On dual-use, check the two MTCR numbers — payload and range — before you know which export regime applies to the aircraft, not the sensor.
An announcement describes an intention, a contract imposes an obligation: here the obligation covers three sensors, not an aircraft, not a doctrine. For qualifying a critical subsystem, as for the traceability of the supply chain behind it, the operational question stays the same: who supplied what, under which controls, and who can prove it at an inspection. That is the control we build to run on the client’s own documents and systems — supplier qualification, component traceability, dual-use verification — with the audit trail ready to produce. And it is the same framework that pulls an organisation’s scattered data — in defence, public administration or healthcare — into a single operational model, on which AI agents execute decisions with a human operator in command: on-premises, on self-contained machines that require no deep integration into the client’s network, or on dedicated cloud with a data centre in Italy, always under shared management — the client should not already have in-house staff administering AI systems.
